How To Stay Safe While Working With A Dump Truck

All dump trucks are not the same since they come in different shapes and sizes. Regardless of the different types, one thing should remain the same across the board, and that is safety.

Believe it or not, dump trucks can be quite dangerous, for both the driver and/or the people at a job site. Seeing how safety cannot be compromised, here are a few tips to consider while working with a dump truck to avoid a catastrophe from taking place.

1. Don’t Underestimate the Importance of Maintenance

Of course, things break, but that does not mean they should be left to be. At times things will break for no reason whatsoever, which is why it is your job to fix them.

Enough emphasis cannot be placed on the fact that you will need to ensure your dump truck is in excellent condition. By regularly maintaining your dump truck, you will never have to worry about an accident. Remember, if you own a broken dump truck, it will be unsafe for everyone.

Apart from daily inspections and checks, pay closer attention to the lift cylinders, suspension, and tire pressure. Also, keep the bushings and pins adequately lubricated.

2. Stay on Level Ground Whenever Unloading

When it comes to operating a dump truck, it is all about balance. When unloading, make sure you are standing firmly on the stable ground. Consider the possibility that a dump truck could tip over when the bed is lifted; if not on solid, level surface.

3. Avoid Overloading the Dump Truck

As tempting as it may seem, avoid overloading your dump truck. By overloading your vehicle you may get things done quicker, but at what expense?

With an overloaded dump truck, unloading whatever is on it will prove to be hazardous, to say the least. Simply put, don’t make the truck’s job even harder than it already is.

4. Align the Tractor and Trailer Perfectly

To prevent a disaster, always makes sure the tractor and trailer are aligned perfectly. They have to be as straight as possible to avoid the trailer from tipping on even the slightest of turns.

5. Don’t Drive When the Bed is Raised

Whenever you get onboard, make sure the bed isn’t raised.

Firstly, it is not that difficult to lower the bed. Secondly, if the bed is raised, and if you run across power lines, that will be the end of that. For this reason, and many others, keep the bed flat at all times when not in use.

6. Learn to Talk the Talk

In other words, learn to signal when it comes to operating dump trucks.

Operating a dump truck at times can be a two-person job. Said jobs can work out better for everyone around if the two people involved are on the same page. If someone is helping out with unloading and/or navigation, they are most likely going to do so via hand signals. For this reason, it is essential that both individuals know precisely what each ‘sign’ means.

7. Distribute Loads Evenly

When it comes to loading a dump truck, whatever you are hauling needs to be in the center. This will not only help the truck stay stable, but it will improve its balance at the same time. The center of gravity needs to be maintained, which is possible only if you spread the load evenly across the bed.

Do note though, something as minute as a dip in the ground and low tire pressure can upset a dump truck’s balance, so be sure to check everything is in order before doing anything at all.

Now that you need to know what needs to be done to stay safe while working with a dump truck, try to implement the tips mentioned above for the best possible results. Also, you can look for more tips by doing your homework online, which will undoubtedly benefit you in the long run.
